South Asheville Parks

I love South Asheville for many reasons, Beehive Coffee Bar being one of them, but especially for the easily accessible parks we have available. During the weekend, we can pack a picnic and spend the day at Lake Julian, or go for a quick hike at Collier Cove Nature Preserve during the week. All of the listed options are family- and pet-friendly, and three of the four options listed have picnic tables and shelters. So where can you go spend time outdoors and have fun? Check out the list below! Note: I use the term "South Asheville" loosely.

Nestled behind Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack and some classic Royal Pines homes (and some new construction), Jake Rusher Park has a huge playground area, shelter, and an open stretch of land to use. It's all fenced in and provides a walking loop around the perimeter of the park. There are drinking fountains, but no restrooms available. (A perfect excuse to go to Rocky's!)

You'd never know Jake Rusher Park was between Sweeten Creek Road and Hendersonville Road!

Located just off of Long Shoals Road, Lake Julian park is a large recreational area that offers something for everyone. Picnic tables and shelters, docks and boat ramps, a playground, volleyball, and a disc golf course are all included in the park. During the holiday season, the park sets up lighted figurines for a drive-through light festival. There are benches that face the lake, which provides a peaceful backdrop for all the activities. (Yes, the power plant is across the lake, but we won't let that spoil things.) There are restroom facilities, grills at picnic tables, and a duck/goose feeding station. It's a great spot for a day of fun!

Lake Julian dock and resident water fowl.

Please note that some activities, like fishing or boating, may require permits and/or fees. Check the website prior to visiting for more information.

Bill Moore Community Park (formerly Fletcher Park)

Okay, so it isn't technically in Asheville, or even Buncombe county, but it is close enough and useful enough to be included in this post. As a SAVL resident, I visit Bill Moore Community Park frequently to walk with friends. The park offers quite a few amenities, including a disc golf course, softball/baseball fields, walking trails, and a dog park. Whatever you love to do, you can likely do it here!

I haven't actually visited Collier Cove personally, but I have several friends who regularly hike the trails with their dogs. There are a couple miles of steep hiking trails and spots to picnic, but limited parking. It's apparently a great spot for views of the Butler mountain range. If driving to the Arboretum or the Parkway during the week is too much of a pain, try Collier Cove!

Note: there are no restrooms available!

Blue Ridge Parkway (Honorable mention)

We are fortunate enough to have our own South Asheville entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, located off of Hendersonville Road. While we still will drive to any particular destination, this adds considerable convenience and is just one more reason why I love living and working in South Asheville.

Views like only the Parkway can offer, found at the Buck Springs Lodge Overlook at mile marker 407.6.

Have you been to any of these spots? If so, which one's your favorite, and if not, which park will you visit first?
