We have so many wonderful community partners in Western North Carolina who work to make housing accessible to everyone. I'm going to feature several of them here on the blog, starting with OnTrack. Keep reading to see how this amazing organization serves the community.
OnTrack states their mission best:
"OnTrack WNC Financial Education & Counseling (OnTrack WNC) is a private non-profit, community-supported, United Way agency. Since 1973, OnTrack WNC has helped people achieve their money and housing goals through financial education, counseling and support so that they can overcome crises, afford basic needs, improve money management skills and make sound financial choices rooted in their values."
Pretty much sums it up! They offer classes for folks who want to eventually buy a home, for example, but need to improve their credit history or save some money for a down payment. They teach participants how to manage their money so that they can keep bills current while saving that money or improving their credit score. Many of the classes are free, with other programs costing around $50. (This may even be subsidized, depending on the individual.)
OnTrack can help if someone is facing foreclosure, needs help managing student loan debt, or paying down consumer debt. They also have special programs for seniors and women, and design and implement employer-assisted housing programs through for a couple of major employers in the area.
The classes through OnTrack are practical and the counseling is one-on-one, so participants get real world solutions and customized advice for their situation.
If you're looking to buy a home and it just doesn't seem possible, or if you know of someone who is struggling and could use some help, get in touch with OnTrack. I've personally taken classses there and everyone I encountered was helpful and knowledgeable.
